Franz Spunda is one of the few relatively well-known Olomouc authors writing in German. In 2014, the Olomouc Arbeitsstelle für deutschmährische Literatur held an international conference on Spunda and his work and published an award-winning volume. However, it has not yet published any of his works in Czech translation. The translator has reached for one of the most widely read books from Spunda's early period, the 1928 alchemical novel Baphomet (later published in numerous reprints and licensed editions), which was part of a stream of magical, mystical, occult literature that was fashionable at the time and is now regaining popularity.
