Kapitoly z matematické ekonomie
- Jan Stoklasa
Economics is a social science. As such it considers individuals, their specific features, goals and motivations and interactions among these individuals. On the other hand economics also studies the distribution of resources, which are considered to be limited by their nature. Regardless of where economics is being taught (be it faculties of arts, economic faculties, business schools, technology faculties etc.), it remains a social science. And a a scientific discipline it has to have its methodology, means of building and assessing theories, testing hypotheses and answering its research questions in a rigorous way. An it is particularly this aspect that directs economics back to natural sciences and perhaps even a bit further, all the way to mathematics.
This is why this text on the intersection of mathematics and economics. Not to scare the social-science students, but to show to them that the formal models and mathematics can help them understand complex relationships, can facilitate insights and better understanding of the relevant phenomena. And additionally to show the ability of formal mathematical models to help them answer the "big" questions, such as how to conduct experiments in economics, when we do not want to harm the agents in the system being studied.
This text is intended primarily for the students of the Department of economic and managerial studies (DEMS) at the Faculty of Arts, Palacký University Olomouc - as a study material for the basic course of Mathematics for students with economic and managerial focus and also as additional reading material for other mathematically and economically inclined courses. The goal of the text is to show what models one can use in economics, what is their added value and how it is possible to apply the mathematics knowledge and tools obtained during secondary and tertiary education in specific problem settings.
